Many times I use a familiar action song and tweak it just a bit to reinforce basic concepts. One of the favorites around here is the "Number Hokey-Pokey". We put number flashcards down on the floor in front of the child(ren) and change the words in the song just a wee bit.
Put your number 3 in, take your number 3 out.
Put your number 3 in and wave it all about.
You do the number pokey, you turn yourself about.
That's what it's all about!
Typically, I have a set of number cards while we are singing but do not show the number we're singing right away, giving the children time to find it on their own. Sometimes we randomly place the number in front of us but often we do a quick number recognition and order review by putting them in number order, a minimum of two rows, working from left to right and top to bottom.
You can use shape, alphabet, color, and vocabulary cards also. Have fun!
